Posting secrets

December 1, 2009

I have a secret. You too. We all have. And what? To hush up or to spill the beans about it? We could confide to a dog or to a tree. Whistling it could make the job. Or shouting it out in a canyon. Oder sinking it in a river.

An additional alternative would be to send it. Via a air mail, on a postcard. No, not a ready-made postcard from the shop. You should be a bit more creative. Drawing, painting, tucking, sticking. And then mail it to Frank Warren, 13345 Copper Ridge Road, Germantown, Maryland, USA. Over half a million people have done it already, worldwide. They are now part of postsecret.com, a Frank Warren art project.

David Feucht

November 24, 2009

David Feucht was born 1977 in Örebro, Sweden. Before he can remember, he and his family moved to San Diego (CA).
He was 12 years old when he discovered the Graffiti-Lifestyle and nowadays he is part of the international art scene with his innovating techniques, beautifully mixing painting, graffiti and collages. He studied in Stockholm and has already successfully exhibited his works in Stockholm, Amsterdam, New York and Palma de Mallorca.
For me it is a wonderful discover and will definitively take him as a future reference. Enjoy!

Caroline Gardner

Christmas is in the air and Caroline Gardner can be very expressive in this time of the year. Her drawings awake the Christmas cosyness without being formal or too traditional. She has a light way of saying it all. She’s a master, definitely. With simple, light and joyful drawings for any king of occasion. I’ve always liked stationery; Caroline’s one is in the top 3, indeed.

Geoff the designer

Through a new assignment project for which I will design album artwork for The Whitest Boy Alive I had the chance to discover Geoff McFetride’s work. If there’s something I regret, it is the fact that I spent so much time without knowing them yet!

"Geoff’s work is infused with irony, humor, sadness and imagination that challenges an audience at the most visceral and emotional level." I couldn’t agree more. It feels like his work was going into a childhood memory or my personal space and so awakening cosy and essential feelings. Useless to say that Geoff and The Whitest Boy Alive just fit fantastically together, a perfect match!

The Gorjuss fashion girl

November 20, 2009

I know it’s a bit childish, but I was looking for inspiration for my animation work for litte Celine (the cutest princess on the world - my sister’s daughter:-) and I found this Suzanne Woolcott’s little character, Gorjuss. She’s cute and has personality, she’s not the boring pink dressed girlish beauty, she has this mysterious expression and and is dressed in a no-mainstream-but-stylish way. I like her. Enjoy.Gorjuss

Family

November 4, 2009

Strolling around the Kampa Museum - third time this year - my regaled eyes stopped again in front of Nepras work: his six family members, all of different sizes but with the same droll hilarious glance are being leaded by the father. They are all red, like most of Nepras sculptures, and that’s the reason why the Communists used to hate both Nepras and his work. Due to his tense relations with them, this modern Czech artist was barred from exhibiting between 1974 and 1988. Definitely a cultural loss, but fortunately, after the fall of Communism, Karel Nepras was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His sculptures gained him recognition in many countries and can be found in collections in Paris, Washington and in Germany.

Not a common trunk

October 13, 2009

Do you want your homeoffice in a trunk? I do. Look at this classic-looking Mayfair Steamer Secretary Trunk!

Crafted by antiques dealer and furniture maker Timothy Oulton of London, this reproduction comes with a filing cabinet, several drawers, multiple shelves, a functional pull-down work desk (perfect for your Mac) in front of a tack-on board and bottom space to fit a folding chair into.
And when you are finished with work, or you must suddenly drop what you were doing (homeoffice workers know what I am talking about), then you just close it and roll it thanks to its wheels anywhere you wish: it will store your work in the needed privacy and your living-room will still look neat and tidy.
Panels are all handmade with distressed vintage cigar and aniline-dyed leather, wrapped over a solid wood frame.  Every part of the trunk is luxurious, with leather-clad corner brackets and handles, 3,000 brass nailheads, oak slats with a tobacco finish and antiqued cast-metal. No two are exactly alike, making each trunk truly unique. It has that antique look that you can’t just buy in Ikea.
It’s designed for those nostalgic users who like classics. Though Gavin would call them old-rich demographic, we like it and it would fit into our living room when my homeoffice room will be given other purposes….

designblok ‘09

October 12, 2009

dozen of showrooms, hundreds of exhibitors, two superstudios and one aim: show the world what you’ve been creating for so long. a very inspiring event and venue which I discovered just by chance thanks peter’s wristband.

strolling through the four floors of the superstudio classic in holesovice my eyes were cuddled by artifacts of harmonious design & surprisingly often of intelligent utility. good opportunity to talk to the designers themselves.

i also like the poster for the last night party - the "design lovers party". cool name, nicely put on the ad.

hopefully designblok ‘10 will come sooner.
